Prince of the Lilies

Ancient Civilizations is back for one special event: The Mysteries of the Minoans.  This is a brand-new addition to the Ancient Civilizations program series.  The Minoan civilization remains the most mysterious ancient civilization today.  Who were the Minoans?  How did their civilization fall?  Was this the lost kingdom of Atlantis?  We invite you to explore this lost world which scholars are still trying to piece together.

This program will differ slightly from previous Ancient Civilization programs in that it will be even more hands on.  Participants will “dig” and piece together fragments just like real archaeologists.  Registration is required and you can register in person at the Youth Reference Desk or call (847) 546-7060 prompt 5.

For information and pictures from past programs, go here.

Questions?  Contact Briana at (847) 546-7060 ext. 119 or email at bjackson@rlalibrary.org

It’s back to school time which also means there are brand new and excellent programs at the Round Lake Area Public Library!  Newsletters have begun to be distributed, but if you do not receive a copy in the mail, you can pick one up at the library or view it electronically as a PDF here. Additionally, you can view children’s programs specifically on our Programs page which has been updated with fall program information.

You must register for each program unless otherwise noted in the program description.  Registration begins August 28 at 9:00 a.m.  You may also call (847) 546-7060 prompt 5.

If you find you are unable to attend a program we ask that you please inform us as soon as you are able so that we can offer the space to another patron in the best interests of the community.  Thank you!

We look forward to seeing or hearing from you August 28th!  Remember, program fill up very fast, so sign up early!

On Wednesday, August 4, the Round Lake Area Public Library hosted juggler extraordinaire the Truly Remarkable Loon!  He balanced spinning plates on skinny sticks — 10 at one time! — and juggled and told many funny jokes.  Children and adults alike truly enjoyed his remarkable performance!

Thanks, Mr. Loon, for a fun afternoon!  (aha!  Check out that rhyme!)

Ice Cream Social

Please join us for the Ice Cream Social on August 7 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.  This party os for those who have completed the Summer Reading Club and recevied an invitation.

We will have ice cream, cookies, and a wonderful array of toppings.  Come and celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Club and socialize with friends and meet new faces!  We will announce the winners of the Grand Prizes, too!  You do not have to be present in order to win a prize, but we do hope all our wonderful finishers can attend this fabulous party!

Summer Reading Club Extended to August 2

Originally, the last day to turn in Summer Reading Club book logs was July 31.  Due to the library being closed Friday for Staff training, we have extended the last day to August 2.  We hope to see the rest of our Summer Reading Club participants over the next few days with their completed reading logs!

Reminders: By finishing the Summer Reading Club, you earn a free book and the chance to win wonderful Grand Prizes such as a bike or a neat shoulder bag.  If you read just one extra book, you have double the chance to be selected for a Grand Prize!  Also, the Ice Cream Social on August 7 will be available to all who finish the Summer Reading Club.

Once again the last day of Summer Reading Club is extended to August 2.  Happy reading!

Library Dogs!

As you may know, we offer regular programs Paws To Read–now featuring Fred!–where children are invited to read to a trained therapy dog.  Not only do the children develop a friendship with a warm and cuddly pooch but also they develop their reading skills!  Our library began this program with Lad a few years ago and because of the success of this program it has continued.  However, Round Lake is not the only library participating in this innovative reading encouragement program; many other libraries feature this as well!  Click on the link below to read about other libraries and their library dog!
